Name Game

“Come on everybody, I say now lets play a game. I betcha I can make a rhyme out of anybody’s name.” ~ Shirley Ellis and Lincoln Chase

Remember the song “The Name Game”? It was originally sung by Shirley Ellis in 1964. Many have recorded it in the years since but MY favorite is a scene from the the 1986 movie The Money Pit.

Ha! I smile just thinking about it. Do you remember this scene?

Well, I was thinking this week about how often times I’ll hear a particular name and it automatically makes me think of a song or, better yet, start singing that particular song. I never was one of those lucky ones that had a song with my name in it but I always thought it was pretty cool for those who do. I’m sure many of you who are one of the “lucky ones” would beg to differ.

For instance, my best friend is named Rhonda… what song comes to mind? Also, another very good friend of mine, her name is Jenny… guess what her ringtone is when she calls me? I shared an office for 10 years with a friend named Liza. Any thoughts on the song I sang quite often to her? My mom’s name is Sue so the song “Runaround Sue” by Dion was always a song that people seemed to associate. Needless to say, I’m pretty sure my mom didn’t appreciate that so much. Ha!

How about that very catchy tune by Toni Basil, “Mickey” and also “Benny and the Jets” by Elton John. Too many to list!

Are you one of the “lucky ones”? What song would people sing to you when they saw you or met you for the first time? What friends or family members do you have that this happens to all the time?

Yep, I still think it would be pretty cool to have my name in a song so long as it’s not some “why did you break my heart” or “I don’t like you very much” song. Hmmm… maybe I’ll write one?

With joy,

~ Becky ♥ ~
